![]() On 18 September 2014, my personal goal of reaching the Modern Pentathlon Masters World Championships will become a reality. My goal in the competition is to achieve a top 10 position in my age group (Mens 40-49). I am now in my second year of training for Pentathlon. This has involved balancing a challenging training schedule around work and family life. Despite a setback in the early part of this year when I was recovering from a broken collar bone and operation to fix it, I am pleased with my progress, especially in fencing and riding. For the past three months I have managed 8-12 training sessions per week across the five disciplines and general strength work. As I prepare to set off, I would like to thank my coaches who have helped me along the way - Alistair, Caroline, James and Priscille - whose knowledge, patience, constructive criticism and support have been invaluable.

![]() All five sports in just one day in a relay with modern pentathlete Caroline Nickerson. We both scored max points in the riding and had a respectable swim, but my lack of fencing skills and experience has left us in sixth place as we prepared for the final event, the combined run & shoot relay. Thanks to some excellent shooting by Caroline and some gritty fast paced running from the two of us, we climbed up the rankings to reach the podium and claim a bronze medal. Incredible! Many thanks, CN! Some of the athletes at the end of the run. Aged 30 to 77. That means I could still be doing this in 37 years time! What a great thing to look forward to!
My run went well and placed 6th out of 20 with another PB of 7.28 over 2km. Overall I am 11th out of 15 in my age group for the European Masters. I am delighted with the score, especially given I have only had 4 weeks of training. Tomorrow is the team relay event - all 5 sports in one day. Go GB! 38 bouts against several Olympians and international épéists. I have only fenced 6 times ever. I managed 11 wins.
Now it is all down to the run... PB of 1.18 for 100m. Cold and rainy but we got to keep warm in a hot spring by the pool!
Three down, two to go. Just shot 164. My second best. Slightly disappointed to have shot a 5 in the first 10 but had a good home run averaging 8.6.
Two events down. Three to go. Pasta time! Completed the jumping course clipping one fence and going over the time by 1 second. Total deductions 44 points. This gives me 1156 points after the first event.
